Gone Girl- unexpected plot twist and equally unexpected outcomes

December 2, 2014

“What have we done to each other? What will we do?”

These are the opening lines of “Gone Girl.”

The movie starts off with a man wanting to crack his wife’s skull to find out, “What have we done to each other? What will we do?”

The mysterious and dark opening of the movie blazes hundreds of questions across the mind of the audience. The final question is “What the hay?!”

In the next scene of the movie the couple is introduced. Nick, who is “a corn fed salt of the earth Missouri boy,” and his future wife Amy, who is the star child of “Amazing Amy.” The book was written by her parents.

After two years of dating Nick asks Amy to marry him. Both are writers and eventually Nick becomes unemployed. They moved to Missouri to take care of Nick’s dying mother. After settling in Amy buys Nick a bar, which he co-owns with his twin sister Margo.

The movie continues to roll on revealing that Amy is unhappy with the man she “created,” she then disappears and the unanswered question becomes – Did Nick Dunne kill his wife? All evidence of her disappearance points to Nick, but who really is the madman?

The movie was directed by David Fincher; the main characters were Nick (Ben Affleck) and Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike). The scenes between Affleck and Pike were the most intense scenes of the movie. Together they created a magic of darkness that could not be created on its own.

Although Affleck was a great aspect of the movie, Pike was the topping on the cake. She not only brought tension and mystery to the movie but she made it into something bigger. Like those actors who are known for their character in a certain movie or show. Pike will be known for her character in “Gone Girl.” She played the role so well you would think she is actually insane. Is she truly a nutcase or is she just that great of an actor?

If Pike was not casted in the movie then it would cease to be amazing. It would lack an actor that brings the mystery and questioning aspect to the thriller. She created the icing on the three layer cake (aka she made a great movie amazing).

“Gone Girl” was not initially a movie but a book that was written by Gillian Flynn and published in June of 2012. The film was released into to cinemas on Oct. 3rd, 2014. It is categorized as a mystery thriller.

Unlike most thrillers this one touches home base with every scene. The scariest scene in the movie occur when Amy appears to take a liking to someone she used to date, Desi Collings (Neil Patrick Harris) but instead she slits his throat while he is on top of her, naked, and his blood spills out on top of her. This scene is the most gruesome. You’d think, “How could someone kill someone in such an intimate way?”

The character of Amy only seems to want to get away from those who push her away or who don’t obsess over her, such as her husband and one of her ex-boyfriends she framed for rape. She was obsessed over by her parents and Desi and that is why she stayed in communication with Desi over the course of her marriage with Nick.

Overall this movie would have been nothing without Pike and the chemistry between Pike and Affleck. If you enjoy watching thrillers or anything with non-stopping plot twist then this movie is absolutely for you.
