Independent coffee shop exceeds expectations

February 27, 2015

It’s a sunny, cool and breezy morning. In other words it’s a great morning, why not go out with some friends and enjoy a nice breakfast. That sounds fantastic, but where will you go? You always find yourself at Village Inn or I Hop. Try something new, go to a local cafe that offers lower prices and sometimes, a better taste.

For example a small cafe that is located on 8327 N 30th Street, in the historic Florence Area. This cafe is referred to as “Harold’s Koffee House.” The hours range from 6 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon. That means breakfast and lunch, wait they also include dinner items on the menu!

The first time I went to Harold’s was just a spontaneous visit because I was in the neighborhood and starving. The first time I ordered scrambled eggs with a bunch of different vegetables mixed in with it, none the less, I was surprised at how great it tasted, everything was so fresh and the flavors mixed together perfectly. The entree was harmonious to my taste buds, a future visit was a must.

Not only was my first dish great but the prices were even better, most of the breakfast items are less than ten dollars. Plus if you order a breakfast entree then you get free coffee, unlimited. Not to mention the coffee is utterly fantastic. Whenever I drink coffee at work or at home I get this weird feeling in my taste buds, but when I drink coffee at Harold’s that weird feeling is never present.

The first thing that comes to mind in my memories is the classic diner feel. If you have ever watched “A Cinderella Story,” starring Hilary Duff, you know she worked in a classic diner her father owned. “Harold’s Koffee House” is similar to the atmosphere of the diner in “A Cinderella Story.” So in other words, the environment is laid back and gives off the vibe of a 50s cafe. Harold’s is a place where you can go and forget about any problems you once had, the only thing that matters is what is happening right there in front of you.

It’s a break from the traditional bar stools and single row of booths. There is plenty of extra space and seating, and yet the place still feels very classic, cool and laid back. Even on a weekday, before school, there were all kinds of people from college kids to the standard morning coffee crowd, aka older folks. And of course the food we had a great breakfast all around. The eggs I had were great. Everything tasted fresh and all the ingredients were proportioned right. My co-diner agreed, and we planned to be back for more.

Another visit I had, it was mid-afternoon and I ordered Chili, although this is the only lunch entree I had, it wasn’t as great as the breakfast food. The chili was thin and lacked flavor, although it was cheap it was not worth the wait or the money.

The best entree I have ever had from Harold’s was the two on top, this dish features hash browns, gravy, your choice of eggs, and sausage. The sausage is juicy, flavorful and goes a long way. This dish is timeless and a classic that anyone would like.

If you enjoy great breakfast food and fantastic prices, “Harold’s Koffee House” is the place for you. So put on your pants and head out to Harold’s and enjoy your two on top with a nice cup of coffee.
