Partisianship is Destroying America

November 7, 2018

Since the 1970’s congress has increasingly become more and more partisan. Even now congress is more divided than ever, leaving the legislative process at a standstill. Congress has not been doing their job effectively, as they refuse to compromise or corporate.
The pending dangers of extreme polarization call for an immediate solution. Partisanship limits congress’ law making ability and is weakening the federal government as well as the nation. One of the main issues in the government today is the two-party system.
In 1796, as he was leaving office, President George Washington wrote in his Farewell Address, to be wary of “the baneful effects of the spirit of the party” and he stressed the importance of not allowing “a small but artful minority” to put in place of the delegated will of the Nation, the will of the party”. Washington was wise in his warning against letting political party affiliations and agendas take priority over what is best for the nation.
From the beginning of America’s two-party system, it’s been more trouble than it’s worth. Since then, America’s government, (mainly the legislative branch) has increasingly become less Bi-Partisan (consisting of or supported by two political parties) and instead of legislators working together for the benefit of the nation, congressmen and women are prejudiced in favor of their party and refuse to corporate for the good of the nation.
Republicans disagree or object to things simply because Democrats are in favor of said things. It has gotten to the point that I am generally convinced that if one party acknowledged that the sky was blue, the other would argue it isn’t; not because they see a different color but because the parties hate each other more than they love the American people.
A polarized congress is counterproductive. Nothing is passed, no bills are signed into laws, nothing changes, and the American people continue to suffer because of it. Bi partisanship is more needed than ever before, and If sworn enemies Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were able to put aside their differences and work together on the Nation’s first undertrial, then it should be no big favor to ask Republicans and Democrats to work with each other to solve pressing issues effecting both parties and the rest of the Nation.
The severe polarization of the congress is a result of extremist major parties and regional specific campaigning methods. Don’t buy into what the parties are selling, if even part of their platform’s unease you. Voters are heavily persuaded into voting for someone they may not agree with rather than throwing away their vote (voting third party). If American voters can compromise their feelings and beliefs for the best of the nation, then congress should be able to repay the favor and support their districts and cater to someone other than themselves.
