VMAs anticlamactic, free from usual absurdity

The MTV Video Music Awards, are always wild from start to finish, but this year happened to be the exception. To the surprise of many, the 2014 VMAs were relatively controversy free.

Different artists wowed on stage with eccentric set pieces and amazing vocals. Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande and Jessi J teamed up to perform their new collaboration, “Bang, Bang.” And it certainly was a “bang, bang.” Minaj suffered a wardrobe malfunction and had to hold on to her dress during the entire performance. Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora preformed their song “Black Widow” to a frenzied crowed and Taylor Swift literally let loose as she performed her song “Shake If Off.” We can even conclude that Swift showed more skin than Minaj and her wardrobe mishap.

It was a night for all artists involved in the music industry, but the VMAs quickly became Beyoncé’s show. Beyoncé preformed and extensive medley of songs from her newest album, turning her performance into a mini-concert, and suprring comments on social media talking about Queen Bey. As her performance ended her husband Jay-Z and their daugher, Blue Ivy awarded Beyoncé with the Video Vanguard award, creating a tender family moment for all to see, and displacing rumors of a divorce.

And what would the VMAs be without a Miley Cyrus controversy? Cyrus’ date to the award show was a young homeless man named Jesse Helt.

There was confusion when Helt accepted Cyrus’ award and gave a moving speech on teen homelessness in Los Angeles. As it turns out Helt is wanted by the police for various charges on trespassing private property.

For once Cyrus used her fame to do something good. Instead of focusing on Helt’s past, we should pay attention to a growing concern that affects hundreds of people. Maybe in the near future she’ll stop her crazy antics. Just maybe.

It was almost a disappointment, really. We’ve all been used to watching the VMAs and watching something absurd unfold throughout the show. Yet all we got was Minaj’s horrific wardrobe malfunction, her “Anaconda” performance being censored and Swifts horrible performance of “Shake If Off.”

Honestly I was expecting so much more. Maybe I just got so used to watching celebrities do foolish things at the VMAs, that when they finally acted somewhat civil, it was a big letdown. I’ll go as far to say that the Emmy’s were better, even though I have my own problems with the winners and the show overall. The VMAs felt as if there was something missing, either a celebrity appearance or just some absurd controversy.

It will probably be the only night we’ll ever get of celebrities acting like us; it makes them seem human almost. Nothing really wild happened at the VMAs, it’s just strange and if it wasn’t for my curiosity towards these shows, I would’ve never watched it. Hopefully by next year the VMAs will pick up its crazy streak and we can then make fun of whatever unfortunate celebrity ends up making a complete fool of themselves.
