Pink Floyd to release new album in Nov.

British rock stars, Pink Floyd, have set Nov. 10 as the official release date for their first album since 1994. The highly anticipated album titled, The Endless River, will be the fifteenth full-length recording by the band since releasing The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, almost 50 years ago during the Syd Barrett era.

The Endless River will be produced by David Gilmour, Martin Glover, Andy Jackson and Phil Manzanera. The album will be released by Parlophone and Columbia Records, respectively in a Friday-release.

The album will be the bands’ first since the death of keyboardist and founding member Richard Wright, though he does appear after dying. It has been described as a “swan song” for Wright and will be mostly compromised of instrumental, relaxed music.

The Endless River is based on 20 hours of unreleased material written and recorded by the band, produced by Wright during sessions for Pink Floyd’s previous album The Division Bell in 1993. The Endless River was finally finished in Gilmour’s recording studio in 2013 and 2014.

The news of a new Pink Floyd album was met with high anticipation by fans and critics alike, especially regarding the absence of Roger Waters who departed from the band in 1985. Nobody was really expecting Pink Floyd to release any new music, so the announcement of The Endless River came as a welcomed surprised.

It has been made clear that although Waters recordings will make up the album, he will not be returning to the band; much to the dismay of fans and critics alike.

The Endless River contains the sounds we have all grown accustomed to associate with Pink Floyd. The album is instrumental with only one song, “Louder Than Words,” with lyrics from Polly Samson, reminiscent of the bands turmoil, arranged across four sides produce by Gilmour, Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson.

Because The Endless River emerged from unreleased recordings from the same period as The Division Bell, it is difficult to grasp that Endless River is its own album and not a continuation to The Division Bell. But fans won’t be left disappointed, the band didn’t stray at all from their roots and Gilmour-lead era, the distinct Pink Floyd sounds and familiarity are there.

The band was generous enough to allow fans a brief thirty second clip teasing for what’s to come. In the clip it features a slick, laid back Gilmour guitar solo over a dense soundscape one might associate from the prong icons. There is no denying that these recordings came from The Division Bell sessions, they share plenty of the same hypnotic, nonchalant atmosphere.

Anticipation for the release of the album is high. There are already lots of people lined up to critic the album. Fans are awaiting the release of the album that will allow them a look into what inspiration was behind The Division Bell album and how it came about. It will be a neat experience listening to both albums and see whether or not they will work together; since The Endless River would be a lead up to The Division Bell, because of the unreleased material that makes up the new album.

The Endless River will be completely reminiscent of what Pink Floyd is. The album will definitely be a journey the way each Pink Floyd album is. It’s a relief that their new album sticks to what makes up and what Pink Floyd is instead of introducing new material. Fans won’t be disappointed with the new release and even though the rumors of a possible tour may be false, at least we can sit back and enjoy one more Pink Floyd album for the time being.
