Football Players Remain Optimistic Despite Losing Streak

October 5, 2017

Unimaginable tension surges through both the stands and on the field. Both seconds and penalties against the Eagles fly by. The Bryan Bears are just barely holding on to a 3-point lead. Finally, the scoreboard shows nothing but zero; for the first time in 28 games, the Bears leave Seeman Stadium on the night of September 9 with a win, with a score of 15-18.

The Eagles remain without a win, but not without the spirit and hard work that creates an Omaha Central High School football player. “No one expects to lose,” Fullback Elijah Smith said. Despite losses against Bryan and North Platte, the football players work to improve their skills and win future games. “Our record might not show it, but we’re putting in the hard work,” Wide Receiver Gunnar Duke said. As the players prepare for further games, they believe that the hard work put in will benefit greatly by the end of the season. “There’s not a team that I know of for a fact that can beat us on a good day,” Lineman Ellis Hart said. As the season continues, the team’s skills will be tested as they face different teams.

One of the teams that Central faces in the season is against the Westside Warriors. “They pass a lot, so our DVs are going to have to step it up and have good coverage,” Duke said. In order to make these goals happen, the team can always be seen focused on what is needed to be done in order to win. “We focus on the fundamentals and the simple stuff, because you’ve got to do the little stuff to achieve the great stuff,” Duke said. Without these fundamentals, the team faces challenges that could cost points or even games, such as penalties and adapting to the change brought on by the change in the head coach. “We have a new coaching staff, so we didn’t know what the plays would be,” Hart said. Although the coaching staff has changed, the spirit that the football team has not changed one bit.

The Eagles have gotten along and worked together as a team more. “We became more together as a team. We don’t argue as much as we used to do last year,” Wide Receiver Torrence Jackson said. The students at Central might have felt their faith in the team slipping away, but the Eagles have done everything except give up. “We have a team still. No one really gives up on us. We’re still trying to win,” Smith said. No matter what the record says, the real achievements are the ones made behind the scenes, as players improve and become stronger both physically and mentally. “If you don’t work hard at practice, it translates onto the field,” Hart said.
