ASVAB test cancelled due to low attendance

November 15, 2017

Central’s Guidance Counselors are always looking for ways to help students both inside and outside of school. One way they have found out there is the ASVAB Test, which stands for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. This test was planned for October 27th, the day after conferences, but was cancelled to low attendance and will be rescheduled in the near future.

The ASVAB test is an aptitude test that measures a person’s strengths, weaknesses, and mental ability. It also gives career information for both the military and normal jobs, and advice on which path (college, military, or vocational school) the tester should choose.  Any school can choose to host this test, as it is completely free and can be given at any school.  Central has chosen to go the paper and pencil route for the test this year, as the computer network is being fixed.  Until there can be a 100 percent certainty of the computer not crashing during the middle of the test. Sheri Harrah, a guidance counselor at Central, believes that “It is a great tool for looking at possible career opportunities. I believe that Central feels it is a good option for students, and likes to make it available to them.”

The test was cancelled last week due to low attendance, so Central is planning on rescheduling it. Harrach believes that the lack of people signing up was because on Friday there was no school. To increase turnout, she plans to have the next test on a school day and keep putting the test in the announcements. Right now, they plan on rescheduling on the second week of November, but may have to wait for the test to become available again.

Even though it is a military based test, anyone can take it. Harrach says, “I would recommend it for all students. It is a good assessment of your skills and aptitude and it has a really great career component.” It can also help people who are planning to go into the military, as it is an assessment military personnel are required to take.

All in all, Central has a new opportunity for students seeking career direction/ suggestions and for students planning to go into the military. “I hope a lot of students will take advantage of the ASVAB testing opportunity.”
