It’s time for ‘Time’s Up’

March 2, 2018

Recently, there has been an uprising of people (specifically women) coming forward with sexual harassment convictions of celebrities via social media. After allegations of the famous actor Harvey Weinstein surfaced, an abundance of other well-known men have also been accused. The use of the “me too” hashtag has prompted thousands of people to come forward to share their experiences of sexual abuse. This has caused a wide-spread recognition of the issue and support for the victims throughout America.
In response to this issue and the thousands of tweets that included the me too hashtag, a movement called Time’s Up was created. Time’s up provides a call-to-action that advocates for the end of misogyny and unfair treatment of women at work. Time’s Up was founded by 300 women in Hollywood from writers to actresses to agents who hope to make the workplace for females around the country a more safe and equal environment. Their goal is to not only make people aware of the prevalent sexual misconduct issues, but to also ask American’s to challenge these problems by confronting those in power while also making powerful positions more equal.
The initiators of the movement claim that “the clock has run out on sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace”. They promote a better America and have further urged citizens to realize the wrongdoings in this country so that we can band together to make them right. The me too hashtag helped people to voice their stories of sexual assault while the Time’s Up movement is taking it further through its actions against this issue.
Overall, Time’s Up is a positive step for America and its realization of some of the inequality taking place in the country. An abundance of celebrities have been accused of sexual harassment, which has expedited this realization. Time’s up is working to better the American workplace with the goal of improving “laws, employment agreements, and corporate policies”. There is a brighter future ahead if movements like Time’s Up can succeed and help people to realize and correct the wrongdoings in America.
