Prioritizing Students as One

April 5, 2018

When I entered high school, I had my mind set on what career I was going to pursue and knew exactly what I had to do to get there. I understood that I was a teenager and that I would change my mind a lot the next four year on what I really wanted to do with my life, but it didn’t. Since the beginning my mind has been stuck on that one career but it wasn’t taken seriously, why weren’t my passions prioritized? Why was I stuck learning things that did not benefit me? Do I really need this in the future?
I personally feel school should be able to offer courses more shaped around student’s passions and interest. I attend a public school, so I do understand the difficulty this could to design classes based around a student’s desires, but the outcome would be significantly better in a sense of more people attending school and graduating. I hate going to school because of unnecessary classes that I am required to take.
Of course, we would have to take courses that teach basic concepts that we will need in the core subjects but using the subjects to our advantages in a way that the students understands the course. Every student is different, and every student works more efficiently in a different way so why are all of them treated the same? Molding students and preparing them to be their future selves is difficult so why can’t we they make it easier.
Focusing on the part where students want to come to school and learn is a start. Students spend a majority of their day in school why not make it enjoyable, an environment where kids are able to expand their knowledge. I want to come to school to feel like I am a priority and not just another student learning nonsense. Being able to express myself in a positive environment.
