Open Campus Should be Allowed

December 20, 2018

Central High School should provide open campus. Upperclassmen should have the opportunity for open campus. Many seniors have multiple study halls or aid period.

In these classes, homework is already completed, and the time is spent on phone or sleeping. Attending a school in the heart of downtown, surrounded by coffee shops and restaurants is a gift. Yet, without open campus students can’t fully utilize the downtown area and their time.

There are multiple concerns that the administration would have: students not returning to school or partaking in inappropriate behavior. This would not be an issue if only certain students were allowed open campus. For example, if students have to have a slip signed by their parent, administrator, and a teacher many students would not be able to have open campus.

Considering school lunch is not the first choice when it comes to satisfying hunger, and the vending machines have a large period of not being able to use, and the healthy vending machine is expensive. With open campus, student would be able to take a break from their phones and sitting bored in a classroom.

Many other schools have open campus with limited time periods and can trust their students. Central should impose an open campus policy, gifted to students with good behavior and a clean school record. This would motivate younger students to study harder and keep good behavior. Open campus would also allow for crowded study halls to have more space for the students. The students would still be checking in and out with attendance and the security guards allowing for complete student safety.
