Is Music Changing

October 16, 2019

Music is changing constantly, for the good or the bad. As we grow our taste in music may vary, the evolution or devolution of music depends on our next generation.

Let’s look at the music from the 2000s to 2018. According to Billboards top 100 artists for music in 2000 Linkin park was in the top five. Likin Park is an American rock band who’s music focuses around rock, hip hop, and electronica. But he has been placed in categories such as alternative rock, hard rock, rap metal, and so on. As for 2018, Billie Eilish is a top artist for that year. Billie Eilish has a unique look which causes her to stand out. She never apologizes for wearing what she wants and being who she wants to be. When looking up Billie Eilish, her genre will come up as pop music, alternative rock, and electropop, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by her appearance. But who is to classify somebody’s art into two or three categories? Art isn’t as simple as black or white, and rock or jazz. And this is what these artists are beginning to realize. There are genres of music that certain people like, being country, rock, metal, indie, jazz and so on. But how do you put them into these categories?

Billie Eilish, perhaps the top artist of 2018, a woman with a soft voice and edgy personality, she is who she is without any apology. “I mean, that’s why I wear big, baggy clothes. Nobody can be like ‘Oh, she’s slim-thick, she’s not slim-thick, she’s got a flat ass, she’s got a fat ass. No one can say any of that because they don’t know” Billie Eilish stated at her Calvin Klein interview. This generation of artists are who they want to be without a second thought

There is no doubt that music is changing. but in what direction, is the music progressing or is it declining? The taste in music is moving quite fast and changing with every generation. As 2020 approaches the music appears to get more ‘edgy’ or maybe it’s just the artists.

Music is changing constantly as the years go on. Artists are developing and becoming more singled out. They are refusing to be set into one genre of music. Take Taylor Swift for example, an artist who is recognized for her songs of heartbreak and country. Her song ‘You Need To Calm Down’ has strayed from her theme of heartbreak and country and is focusing on more social issues at hand. As music progresses the artist do too.

It will be interesting to see what happens as the music continues to change throughout the years.
