Creighton Basketball Season Preview

October 16, 2020

Creighton did not get the story book ending they were hoping for last year, but they are ready to come out and shock the college basketball world. Creighton is set up for an amazing follow up season after winning the Big East tournament just the year prior.

Creighton had on of their greatest recruiting classes ever by signing both Rati Andronikashvili and Modestas Kancleris. Rati is ranked their best recruit they have ever brought by 247 sports.

They also have brought back the entire team, aside from Tyshon Alexander who hopes to be drafted in the upcoming NBA draft. Marcus Zegarowski is coming back after being one of the stars in college basketball last year. Creighton has also done a good job of luring in transfers like Alex O’Connell from Duke.

Creighton will have some competition in the Big East though, in Villanova Butler, and Providence. Recently the schedule for their preseason tournament has been released, and they are favored to win that tournament. This Creighton team is very different from their past teams, because they have a mix of veterans and young promising prospects.

The return of Damien Jefferson and Denzel Mahoney will also be vital to the success of Creighton. Last year Creighton’s small ball lineup with Denzel Mahoney at the five was arguably the toughest to defend lineup in college basketball. Damien Jefferson offered the ability to start and come off the bench as a sixth man. He could also guard the opposing teams best wing and guard while offering upwards of ten points every game.

The Alex O’Connell transfer can also prove to be good for this team. He played for a stacked Duke team and knows what it takes to win basketball games. At best he can be a solid shooter off of the bench and great locker room presence.

But the two players that will define how good this team will be is Marcus Zegarowski and Mitchell Ballock. Both of these players have the ability to rattle of forty every night and will provide consistent playmaking and court spacing for the entire season. Both of these players have also shown that they are not afraid of taking the big shots at the end of games.

The one thing this team is not lacking is confidence. They are going to think they can go out there and beat anyone with their lethal offensive weapons and surprisingly good defensive schemes.

This team may end up being the greatest Creighton team of all time. The only people that is going to be stopping this team from reaching their full potential is their selves.
