Emerging designers making their mark

March 25, 2022

Connor McKnight

Connor McKnight has proved to designers that he has what it takes to sustain a label. The collection showcased an offering of workwear shapes, classic chunky knits and orderly jumpsuits. The highlight of the collection was an extravagant black quilted cape. His collection featured references to the Black Reconstruction era after the Civil War.

Maryam Nassir Zadeh

The label has become a staple for streetwear enthusiasts. Earth tones and textural patterns were featured in the collection. Knitwear, trousers and leather outerwear filled the designs.

Khiry

Jameel Mohammed established an Afrofuturist luxury jewelry brand. Debuted at FW22, the performance piece titled “Fights Reveal Futilities,” is a jewelry collection and custom-made garments. Pale pink denim with stringed pearl detailing, ribboned tank tops and graphic covered shirt proved to be pair perfect with Mohammed’s earrings, chains and rings.

Private Policy

Co-founders Siying Qu and Haoran Li displayed utilitarian-inspired garments. The collection held mostly neutral shades, including beige, olive and pale yellow. These colors were incorporated in the brand’s presentation of harnessed tops, vegan leather and strappy pants. The highlight of this collection was a checkerboard inspired coat.

Les Tiens

Courtney Michelle Ogilvie has bridged the gap between luxury and comfort. This collection highlighted her technique of draping and stylized maturity. Ogilvie previously helped launch brands Fear of God and Yeezy. Since then, she has stepped into the spotlight for her label, Les Tiens. An understated, minimal approach was the pillars of her collection. Elevated men’s basics, including oversized outerwear and funnel-neck sweaters were the collection standouts.

Dur Doux Homme

Mother-daughter duo Cynthia and Najla Burt teamed up with menswear designer Andrew Nowell for a FW22 collection titled “New Mosaic.” The Burt family and Nowell collaborated on a showcase of ten tailored sportswear looks with an urban edge. Sharp trousers incorporated with front-slit hems, sleek overcoats and textured fabrics. A floral-print graphic bomber jacket with mixed materials and boxed leather handbags were their collection highlights.

Maisie Wilen

Yeezy protégé Maisie Wilen rose to fame after Kim Kardashian was seen sporting her designs. The L.A. based designer has become known for her poppy, sugary approach. She has become known for her fun taste in fabrics. With a space inspired look, Vogue is starting to take an interest in her.
