Modern Family’s Actor Ty Burrell receives Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series

The 66th Annual Prime-time Emmy Awards were held in Los Angeles at the Nokia Theater on August 25th. The Emmy’s are held each year to honor the creativity and work put together by television programs, with an audience of close to 16 million. New Late Night host and former SNL comic Seth Myers did the honors of hosting for the awards for the first time in his career. The event brought in some of the best actors from around television as well as the writers, directors, and producers for shows that entertain American and worldwide audiences every day.

Honors are given out for all types of Television programs but one of the most easily recognized is the award for Most Outstanding Comedy Series. The award this year was given to ABC’s Modern Family who beat out programs like The Big Bang Theory and Orange is the New Black. However, Jim Parsons from the Big Bang Theory did receive an award for his role as Dr. Sheldon Cooper in the program. Jim Parsons was humbled by the award and took time to applaud other actors and made a slight suggestion that he fancied other types of acting, aside from his normal comedic role. While the most outstanding Comedic writing went to Louis C.K. for the FX program Louie. Louis C.K. was well deserving.

Another easily distinguished category is Drama. The nominees for the most Outstanding Drama Series were Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Downtown Abbey, Game of Thrones, True Detective, and House of Cards. Ultimately, Breaking Bad won the award while also receiving the award for Most Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Breaking Bad received a total of five major wins, more than any other show. Breaking Bad’s new-found success in the past year helped lead it to receiving the award.

Meanwhile, in the Variety category the Colbert Report won the most outstanding series beating out the rivaling Daily Show with John Stewart as well as Saturday Night Live and Jimmy Fallon. Colbert will take over for David Letterman on Late Night within the year making this the last year of the infamous Colbert Report. While the best miniseries went to FX’s rendition of the 1996 film Fargo, also titled Fargo. CBS’s The Amazing Race won the best Competition Program and beat out shows like Top Chef and The Voice.

Acting awards were also given out to the actors and actresses who performed best on their respective shows. Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad received the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series while Julianna Margulies won the lead Actress role for her work in The Good Wife. Benedict Cumberbatch also slotted a spot for Lead Actor in a miniseries or movie for his role as Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock: “His Last Vow.” Jessica Lange won the same award as an actress as Fiona Goode in American Horror Story.

Nominations for networks were widespread but HBO received far more major nominations with thirty six, putting them seventeen nominations ahead of the runner up FX. Netflix, PBS, AMC, Showtime, CBS, ABC, NBC, Lifetime, BBC America, IFC, and Fox also received nominations for different programs. The Emmys had close to forty people presenting awards but did not present all the awards within the ceremony. Presentations were brought up with wit and sarcasm but also in a polite manner that respected the victors.

A memorial was also held to honor the entertainers who had passed away in the previous year including Maya Angelou, Shirley Temple, Casey Kasem, Robin Williams and many other notable entertainers. Sara Bareilles performed the song “Smile” during the memorial.

The awards kept a similar format to previous years except that the broadcast was changed from the more notable Sunday night slot to accommodate for NBC’s commitment to broadcast Sunday Night Football. Overall, the Emmy’s kept the class from previous years while accommodating to new actors and new programs. Ultimately the Emmys did not provide any drama but holistically honored the best U.S. prime-time television from the previous year.
