The high school football season is ending, and playoffs are on the horizon. Central is seeded seventh in the playoff bracket.
Central’s 27-7 win over Fremont Oct. 24 allowed the Eagles to have a home game. That game is set to take place on Friday at 7 p.m. at Seeman Stadium against Lincoln East.
Central’s 31-28 upset win over Westside, first seed in the playoffs, was the deciding factor for its playoff spot.
Injuries have been a big problem for the Eagles, including losing starting quarterback senior BJ Newsome for two weeks. Sophomore Yasir Grixby, a running back/wide receiver with 133 rushing yards and 341 receiving yards on the season and backup QB, had to step up in those pivotal two weeks.
“I mean, quarterback is not really nothing too new to me. I played quarterback all Little League growing up, so I’m kind of used to it, but I got to step up,” he said.
When asked how he was preparing for playoffs and how the team felt going in, Grixby said, “They really been on us. I felt my teammates really have been lifting me up, telling me they believe in me at quarterback, telling me … I got their trust. So, if I got my teammates’ trust, ain’t nothing else to worry about.”
Junior safety and wide receiver Tori Pittman III backed that up, saying, “I got a lot of faith in Yasir. I feel like everything BJ could do; Yasir could do it.”
Pittmann currently has 261 yards on 14 receptions along with three interceptions.

When asked about a potential deep playoff run and what the players feel they need to do, with multiple seniors no one wants to end their season on a bad taste. “We’ve been competing. We’ve been going through a lot of plays, watching a lot of film. We’re going to be ready for the playoffs,” Grixby said.
