Into the Storm a disasterously good thriller

Into the Storm is a truly versatile film with something for every moviegoer. Its main theme is, of course, an action-packed thriller, but it also has facets of drama, suspense, humor and heroism. It has a fast paced plot with memorable characters and interwoven heart wrenching elements. From sacrifice to saviors, this movie helps to show the best traits of human nature in the midst of disaster. Into the storm is definitely eight out of ten.

This movie was shot using a self-film sort of method like Paranormal Activity or Quarantine, but overall it had a more documentary like feel. Despite the way Into the Storm was shot it was quite fluid and smooth, unlike many other films done in this manner. There was just enough jostling and roughness for a natural disaster film without being over the top.

The film jumped between the perspective of two high school aged brothers a storm chasing crew and amateur daredevils. At the beginning of the motion-picture this set-up seemed somewhat chaotic and choppy. However, throughout the length of the movie it created a layered effect that added to the whole cinema experience. This style allowed for changes in perspective, which helped the overall flow of the storyline.

Surprisingly, the main-characters were well developed giving the movie a perfect balance of humanity and destruction. This fact was one of the key reasons why this movie worked. This allows the audience to be able to connect with the characters, contributing to the element of suspense that enhanced the plot-line.

Into the Storm’s story spans a day and is majorly told from the perspective of time capsule videos for the local high school. “Raw” footage from a crew of tornado chasers searching for the perfect storm after more than a year of “dry” material is featured. In this case, the use of video footage, helps to add a sense of reality to the story.

The group’s search takes them to Silverton, where Allison (the team’s meteorologist) believes there will be a massive storm that will end their streak of bad luck. In the end, her calculations were correct and the team is in for a career making storm system. However, as the day progresses it begins to seem as if the team has gotten in over their heads. The weather not only becomes unpredictable, but a second powerful system rolls right through Silverton as well. Just when it appears as if nothing else could go wrong the storyline takes a twist leaving the audience on the edge of their seats.

The plot-line focuses more on video and special-effects rather than dialogue, but is done in such a way that it is not lacking substance. There is just enough dialogue to hold the attention of the audience without being too dense for an action film. This fact is one of the reasons why this film is so unique, despite it being an action film, one can definitely say that throughout it the balance between the different pieces is practically flawless.

This motion picture manages to capture the chaos and intensity of mother nature without making it overpowering. Not only does this film take its audience into the eye of the storm, but also glimpses into the lives of those affected by disaster.
From the style of the shooting to the amount of dialogue everything in this movie flows perfectly. This is one of the best recent natural disaster films, with just enough action and substance to make it worthwhile. Into the Storm satisfies its audiences craving for disaster without being just another over the top summer thriller.
