As summer fades into fall and we enter the last leg of the year, it’s easy to forget that there is more to life than school and work. Fall is one of the best times to enjoy nature, community and culture of the Metro and beyond. Here are a few great ways to make the most of your free time this fall.
- Fontenelle Forest
Fontenelle Forest is an amazing place to go if you’re into hiking. It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy the beautiful sights it has to offer. The weather isn’t too hot or too cold, and the leaves are beginning to change.
2. Athletic Events
Showing up to a school football game, volleyball game or any other fall sporting event can be really fun. It’s cheap and convenient, and you get to show your school spirit. Since sporting events are free for students, you can go with your friends. If you have friends who participate in sports you can also attend to support them.
3. Lauritzen Gardens
Lauritzen Gardens is extremely beautiful all year round, and fall is no exception. It offers stunning botanical exhibits and experiences. This is another good option for families.
4. Vala’s Pumpkin Patch
While Vala’s is on the pricier side, it’s still a fun experience. I personally find it nostalgic because I used to go there as a kid every year. It’s suitable for all ages and a good place to bring family and friends.
5. Escape Rooms
There are a lot of escape rooms in the Omaha area, such as The Escape Omaha, Locked Room Omaha and House of Conundrum. I highly recommend that you visit one if you enjoy thrills and solving puzzles.
6. Hummel Park
Another hiking location that isn’t too far out. It’s a very peaceful place to take a nice walk on a crisp fall day. It’s my personal favorite when it comes to hiking.
7. Hitchcock Nature Center
Hitchcock Nature Center is a bit further out than Hummel or Fontenelle, but it’s still gorgeous and worth the trip across the river.
8. Haunted houses
Another great option for thrill-seekers is going to haunted houses. There are many different haunted houses in Omaha, and fall is the perfect time of year to visit one. Some notable locations are Scary Acres, Hillside House of Hell and Madness Haunted House.
9. Bellevue Berry Farm
Bellevue Berry Farm offers berry picking and pumpkin picking as well as hayrides. It also hosts many different festivals year-round, so it’s definitely worth checking out with your friends.
10. Apple picking
If you want to get out and do something fun with your friends, I highly recommend apple picking. There are many orchards near Omaha to choose from. It’s a nice outdoor activity and you also get some fresh apples out of it.
