“K-pop Demon Hunters” is an American animation produced by Sony Pictures animations released by Netflix on June 20, 2025. It has since become the most watched film on the platform, breaking the record with 236 million views and estimated to have earned between $18 million to $20 million.
The story centers on a K-pop Girl group Hunter/X composed of members Rumi, Mira and Zoey, who are secretly demon hunters. They use their “golden voices” to create a protective barrier, also known as Honmoon, and the group protects and defends their fans and humanity from demons that feed on human souls, all for their ruler, Gwi Ma.
Saja Boys is a five-member K-pop band of demons whose goal is to destroy the Honmoon and allow Gwi Ma and demons to overrun humans. The members include Jinu, Mystery, Abby, Romance and Baby Saja.
The film was directed by Maggie Kang, whose inspiration for the story comes from her Korean heritage along with Korean mythology and demonology that has contributed to the story a lot by shaping its supernatural elements and themes.
The film consists of various soundtracks such as “Golden,” “Soda Pop,” “Free,” “Takedown” and many more. These soundtracks reflect the K-pop vibes that Kang wanted to give out.
“K-pop Demon Hunters” attracted a lot of attention from not only K-pop fans but also a large new audience, marking growing interest in Korean culture.
The characters in the film are partially inspired by real life K-pop idols like Black pink, Itzy, BTS, Ateez and Cha eun woo. Concert lighting, musical styles, fandoms, fashions and the songs used are elements of the K-pop world which captures the essence of and portrays K-pop in real life.
“K-pop Demon Hunters” also gained recognition from real-life K-pop idols, with some doing covers such as; Cha eun woo doing a cover of “Free,” Solar (Mamamoo) doing a “Golden” cover. And others like Jungkook from BTS and Wooyoung from Ateez reacting to it while on live. Jungkook even cried in the film’s climax.
The film is available on Netflix, and both original and sing along version are accessible to stream.
