Central hosted its first unified basketball game against Buena Vista on March 25. Organized by ACP teachers Sabrina Marschner-Fant and Jamie Johnson, the game was hosted during the school day.
The energy in the gym was electric. Spirit poms were handed out in both schools’ colors to show support.
“It was good to see students coming to support,” Johnson said.
This game was a huge opportunity for the kids. “Most of the time the kids are just with each other all day, they don’t have much opportunities to kind of be supported or even be part of gym education here at Central,” Johnson said.
“I truly think it meant more to the kids because they don’t get to have many opportunities to experience what the other kids at Central might feel,” Johnson said.
Central has not hosted a unified event since unified bowling in 2022, so given the circumstances this event was a success
“It means a lot to us in the sense that Central has not really been able to do things like this in a while. It’s eye-opening, so it was awesome,” Fant said. “Planning this for the first time took a couple weeks; we had to find all the bits and pieces and put them together.”
