SPOILERS FOR DEXTER, DEXTER NEW BLOOD, AND DEXTER RESURRECTION
Since 2006 Dexter Morgan (Micheal C. Hall) has been taking out killers in the show “Dexter,” and after 10 years lying in wait, the Bay Habor Butcher is back.
“Dexter Resurrection” is a combination spin off show and revival of the original “Dexter” show, which ran from 2006 to 2012. The show’s premise is a Miami forensic blood spatter analyst who is secretly a serial killer himself; however, one with a moral code to “only kill other killers.” He eventually flees Miami and goes to New York, faking his death for 10 years.
“Dexter Resurrection” takes place in New York City after Dexter was shot in the chest by his son Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott). After recovering from a ten-week coma he reunited with a long-lost friend and colleague Miami PD Sergeant Angel Batista (David Zayas).
This spin-off is written by original “Dexter” showrunner Clyde Phillips. The show feels very much like the best seasons of the original show, like going back to basics while innovating to adapt to the post pandemic world of TV. While also having a new power in play: Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), a billionaire obsessed with serial killers to the point where he invites them to his home and gets them to share stories and details about their gruesome kills with him.
The acting is incredible and heart-throbbing with themes of becoming a parent. With beautiful and devastating moments being beautifully acted by Hall. A moment that comes to mind is when Prater shares his tragic backstory with Dexter and then switches to his obsession with killers and how they relate, which kept me glued to the screen.
The “Dexter” series has been notoriously known for its poor endings, but “Dexter Resurrection” breaks that streak and has the best ending in the whole series to date. The final episode has brilliantly crafted moments and is wonderful and gut-wrenching to watch. I highly recommend the show to anyone who loves drama shows or past fans skeptical of the new series. It is available to watch on Prime Video and Paramount+.
