Mac DeMarco

With an oddball personality and unique song writing and production, Canadian artist Mac DeMarco rose to fame unexpectedly quickly. While his image projected a charming laid-back slacker, his songs often contain mature themes like aging, commitment, and family. After the release of 2012’s LP Rock and Roll Night Club, a proper debut arrived that same year with 2, both released by the Captured Tracks label. Long tours and press grew DeMarco’s image, and the 2014 album Salad Days pushed his strange mix of dream pop, jazz, and surf rock, selling tens of thousands of copies and changing the shape of what was happening in indie rock at the time. The album was nominated for Canada’s esteemed Polaris Prize.

When growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, Mac went under the name make out videotape. After high school Mac self released Heat Wave, a collection of songs written while bored and loss in the new city. Now with the help of Alex Calder and Jen Clement they signed with unfamiliar records and where touring in fall 2009.

In 2011 Mac moved to Montreal, dropping the band in pursuit of a solo career. 2012 he signed with Brooklyn indie label Captured Tracks and released his debut album Rock and Roll nightclub under his own name. This new solo record was different from the sparkly, upbeat releases of Makeout video tape, with a darker tone and Mac getting experimental with his vocals this record represents a corner stone of things to follow.

Just months after rock and roll night club, macs second full length album “II” was released. With a maturing sound critics and music lovers fell in love immediately, lighting up the tone compared to last record “II” is full of bright hooks and captivating solos and melodies. Macs goofy personality and relaxed sound is exposed heavily here, drawing heavy inspiration from John Lennon and other Beatles elements

Spending most the the following year touring in spring of 2014 his 3 full album “Salad Days” was released. His popularity went through the roof with this release, with tracks like “Chamber of Reflection” and “Salad Days” becoming fan favorites. In 2015 the dreamy “Another One” was released. With bouncing melodies and dreamy synthesizers this collection of love songs are easily heard and relatable as that was Macs goal.

2017 “This Old Dog” was released. Slowing it down more then ever, Mac gets personal singing about his family and lack of father figure. Keeping the same dreamy melodies and charming synthesizers its easy to drift off while listening to this record. Set to release another record by the end of this summer, it’s a mystery what path Mac will make, with the last two releases seemingly becoming more and more slow we’ll have to wait and see of hell follow this patters or go back to his goofy up beat ways.
