The Benson Strip is expecting a flurry of activity with this year’s themed costume parade.

This non-profit social event promises to bring a steady flow of customers and avid undead fanatics to the newly-restored area of Historic Benson. The traditional walk is held annually, close to Halloween. This particular year, it happens to fall on Saturday, Oct. 25. With the attendance progressively doubling each time it is held, the Zombie Walk is expected to have an extremely successful turnout. According to antique store owner Angie Coleman, the undead block party not only allows participants to have fun, but it in turn helps the surrounding area grow in terms of popularity.

“It brings a lot of people into Benson, and I know zombies are popular…I think it’s great for the neighborhood,” Angie Coleman, owner of MishMash said.

Not only providing a prosperous night for locals, the Zombie Walk aims to help the needy. Few people are aware of the true purpose of the event. Zombie Glass Co-Owner and Zombie walk Co- Founder Jen James has her own set goals to fulfill each year.

“People don’t realize that this is a charitable event, and that all the proceeds go to the homeless shelter,” James said.

With all the cheerful and bloodied fairgoers trickling in and out of shops, major financial gain is expected for both the businesses and the charity raffle held at the walk. 100 percent of the money made during the prize giveaway is donated to The Siena/Francis Shelter. Benson’s local music venue, The Waiting Room, is expecting a profusion of “walkers” to occupy their makeup booths. With every year the festivities are held, thousands of dollars of undead-themed makeup is used to “zombify” the party.

“People dress up like zombies, and bar hop in Benson…it’s great for business,” Sean Dunbar, owner of Beercade said.

Holding its seven year anniversary this month, the walk is introducing new forms of entertainment, including a possible outdoor music show after dark. More details regarding an official list of bands and artists performing is yet to be released. With the theme being “Carnival of the Dead”, this year’s incarnation of the parade is expected to attract a tremendous crowd. James advises individuals with a fear of clowns to come prepared.
