The girl’s varsity soccer team lost a lot of seniors last year but is now working to improve its team performance. Now that young players are coming into the season with more experience, they hope to lead younger players.
Sophomore Jane Parker said, “Everyone was super welcoming [last year],” and said the team is a genuine safe spot for new players. Partnership is needed for these types of teams, so it is less scary for people who have never played for school or for any public team.
Another sophomore, Angeline Smolsky, said the seniors last year, like Hattie Moeller, Hudson Palu and Jasmyn and Brooklen Hollenbeck, were good role models. “The people on the team were good leaders and good people to look up to,” Smolsky said.
Parker and Smolsky each had one goal last season, and the Eagles finished the season 4-10 and lost to Elkhorn South in the first round of the district tournament.
As for this coming season, Smolsky said, “We lost a good number of seniors, and my confidence is a little low but if I believe in myself and my teammates I know I can do it.”
Smolsky has lots of hope for the team and herself. This year a new group of experienced players joined the team which gives a lot of their teammate’s confidence in their performance.
The team’s first game for the current season was a 4-0 loss to Papillion-La Vista, and they also had a game Tuesday against Mercy. The team’s next game is Friday at Elkhorn South.
