Spanish National Honors Society is a club available for students who excel in Spanish and have a grade point average of at least a 2.51 in Spanish courses. They meet on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in room 127 before school at 7:15 a.m.
They do activities in the community like picking up trash in downtown and helping with food drives. They also make sure to collaborate with other clubs like Latino Leaders, often inviting guest speakers to speak about scholarships and clubs that might be helpful for the members.
Spanish teacher Melissa Kuskie has been sponsoring the club since 2005 and noticed the amount of club members was at its all-time low. She is trying to revive the group because there havebeen fewer people attending since the pandemic.
Kuskie is also the varsity boys’ tennis coach, so, due to her busy schedule it has just started up again. The first meeting happened on Oct. 30 with only seven people attending.
Kuskie has been trying to advertise as much as possible while also asking club vice-president Hellen Jordan Salguero to spread the word.
“I talk to my classes. I teach Honors Spanish 7-8, Honors 9-10 and AP Spanish and Language; I talk to those classes about joining and encourage them especially if their GPA is high in Spanish. It could be not high in regular classes but as long as it is high in Spanish classes they are welcomed to join,” Kuskie said.
The next meeting is being held on Dec. 9 in room 127 before school.
